thanks for the memes

So today I’m a bit in the red with the news, its tough to compete with the big pages! As such todays article is about various random things of interest. Mostly memes and shizzle.

First up the Wiki random albums creeping up all over the web on all kinds of networking sites like facebook, bebo etc. Its essentially a meme where you create a fictitious album cover, title and band name and tag your chums in a picture of the imagined sleeve.

There are rules –

1. Go to “Wikipedia.” Hit “random” and the first article you get is the name of your band.

2. Then go to “Random Quotations” and the last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3. Then, go to Flickr and click on “Explore the Last Seven Days” and the third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

so heres mine (though I cheated a little and used the whole quote as opposed to the last 4/5 words because it went with the picture so well)

The new Tribune album hitting nowhere, ever

The new Tribune album hitting nowhere, ever

Go ahead and make your own! Its totally pointless fun (though what is fun when it has a point – that’s just work pretending to be fun) It is interesting though that almost any quote and any picture will look like an album cover. Artists spend hours and hours pouring over their work to create sleeve art, but album artwork is notoriously pretentious. Isn’t it? Its funny that what we immediately recognise as album artwork doesn’t even need to have any deeper meaning or be unique or unusual, we just expect it to look like ‘The Tribune’ album. I reckon that says something about exhibition attendance in the UK…

People aren't wearing enough hats

People aren't wearing enough hats

Apparently, I heard once, that Bowie used to make up his song titles in a similar though less electronic way by cutting up words and picking them out of a hat.

There’s plenty of music quizzes and all that sort of nonsense. There’s also the ever popular I-tunes ‘soundtrack of your life’ which asks you to press play on random and assign each song to a ‘significant’ event in the pre-dominantly american teen movie of your life  from the opening titles through the first kiss, fight scene to your death and closing credits. (movie? motion picture? no its a bloody film, as I recall it was a horror film) But remember kids no skipping tracks or the whogivesashit police will be round at your house to do Fuck All.

Quite alot of blogs do a day of the week round up or question, such as name your top 3 Irish bands or Who do you think should have won this or that award, that kind of thing. One I saw lately was first lines of songs and people have to name the tracks. Ah rock and pop the glorious umbrella under which so many of us shelter. My recommendation is that we start making these things more difficult, branch out in different musical directions and languages! make it a challenge.

There’s also this one –

Name your top 10 most played bands on iTunes (Or Last.FM): list them one to ten

Occasionally there is an article online on someone’s blog which I really love – check here for the 50 worst bandnames, bad band names are something I love to hate. Really it makes my life more enjoyable in a Catch 22 sort of way. Keep up the good work. In fact I think it has inspired a new blog in the future. Mike’s band names are great but written in 2006 so I think we need an update!!! By the no. 5 Wow Owls! seriously, I laughed so much I cried.

…and then I think I died a little, inside.
