Lyric Inspector

Hey kids, I’ve decided to do a new thing, well similar to my work with Katy Perry (from the Latin ‘Katarius Periclevibla’ – meaning ‘offender of the muses’), where I dissect current pop tunes for their deeper meaning.

Today we’re going to look at a couple of tracks. First hot off the pressure cooker, Lady Gaga‘s ‘Poker Face’. Gagsy herself claims a variety of different meanings for the song, that its about boyfriends who like to gamble, thats its about being bisexual (which seems a cheap shot really, just because you’re into both crowds sexually doesn’t mean you have a flair for mime theatre). My favourite discussion of this song came when Rolling Stone asked her about the infamous ‘bluffin’ with my muffin’ line and she had ‘to explain’ it was metaphor for a vagina. Really, people were having trouble with that, to the point where long standing music news monarchy Rolling Stone had to get THE scoop? When looking at how the song is put together, I would hazard a guess it is a bit a mixture of stuff they had handy, bits of other songs they had lying around just aimed at getting a pop tune down without making a concept album.

But I’d like to do a different take on the lyrics. You know, as I do.

It begins…

Mum mum mum mah
Mum mum mum mah
Mum mum mum mah
Mum mum mum mah
Mum mum mum mah – This appears to be a tribute to the film 1994 Drama ‘Nell’, referencing the oddity of the central character’s speech due to an isolated upbringing with her mother who was partially paralysed and could not construct proper word sounds, starring and produced by Jodie Foster.  Jodie also played Mrs. Annabelle Branford an expert poker player in Maverick, released the same year – Hence Poker Face.

I wanna hold em’ like they do in Texas, Please –
Fold em’ let em’ hit me raise it baby stay with me (I love it)
Luck and intuition play the cards with Spades to start
And after he’s been hooked I’ll play the one that’s on his heart  – In reference to Obama’s win which confounded many republicans in Texas a previously always strong ‘red’ state, Karl Rove hoping and pleading that they remain Republican by any means necessary but seeing that Obama will win due to his popularity and heart.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, ohhhh, ohh-oh-e-ohh-oh-oh
I’ll get him hot, show him what I’ve got
Oh, oh, oh, oh, ohhhh, ohh-oh-e-ohh-oh-oh,
I’ll get him hot, show him what I’ve got – Comparing the election to the first law of thermodynamics which states that the energy of a closed system is conserved. Obama bringing about this energy change in the idealisd state of American Government by giving it a surge of new energy.

Can’t read my,
Can’t read my
No he can’t read my poker face
(She’s got to love nobody)
Can’t read my
Can’t read my
No he can’t read my poker face
(She’s got to love nobody) – Continuing the political satire see here

P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)
P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah) – Here Lady G is making an open declaration of her commitment to all of her fans, including the 1% of the world’s population who suffer from a speech impediment, as previously discussed by her tribute to ‘Nell’ at the start of the song.

I wanna roll with him a hard pair we will be
A little gambling is fun when you’re with me (I love it)
Russian Roulette is not the same without a gun – Examining the relationship between thrill and fantasy and the brutal nature of gambling with firearms. While there can be play fighting and drama within a romantic or sexual setting the absence of true violence such as the suicidal nature of russian roulette without a gun allows the participants to enjoy the ‘fun’ of an imagined threat by heightening the experience without causing long term or permanent damage to either party.

– ( on a more personal side note – Guns are bad enough, GAMES with guns are horrific. This part isn’t funny I realise but it has to be said.)

And baby when it’s love if it’s not rough it isn’t fun, fun
Oh, oh, oh, oh, ohhhh, ohh-oh-e-ohh-oh-oh
I’ll get him hot, show him what I’ve got
Oh, oh, oh, oh, ohhhh, ohh-oh-e-ohh-oh-oh,
I’ll get him hot, show him what I’ve got

Can’t read my,
Can’t read my
No he can’t read my poker face
(She’s got to love nobody)
Can’t read my
Can’t read my
No he can’t read my poker face
(She’s got to love nobody)

P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)
P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)

I won’t tell you that I love you
Kiss or hug you
Cause I’m bluffin’ with my muffin – In reference to the movie The Fabulous Baker Boys, both in praise of Michelle Pfeiffer’s dedication to singing practice, Lady G herself giving theatrical performances and also the nature of the relationship between the films central characters, often pretending not to care about one another.
I’m not lying I’m just stunnin’ with my love-glue-gunning –  love is sticky, carry wetwipes
Just like a chick in the casino
Take your bank before I pay you out – Gaga hopes to one day appear on the weakest link.
I promise this, promise this
Check this hand cause I’m marvelous

Can’t read my,
Can’t read my
No he can’t read my poker face
(She’s got to love nobody)
Can’t read my
Can’t read my
No he can’t read my poker face
(She’s got to love nobody)

Can’t read my,
Can’t read my
No he can’t read my poker face
(She’s got to love nobody)
Can’t read my
Can’t read my
No he can’t read my poker face
(She’s got to love nobody)

Can’t read my,
Can’t read my
No he can’t read my poker face
(She’s got to love nobody)
Can’t read my
Can’t read my
No he can’t read my poker face
(She’s got to love nobody)

P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)
P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)

P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)
P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)

P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)
P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face
(Mum mum mum mah)

I was gonna do La Roux (from the Latin ‘Lavus Rolex’ meaning that which is utterly anhadonic – unable to enjoy anything), but man, she just sucks the joie de vivre out of me, like a synth vampire.
